Survey results after two iterations of the course indicate high levels of perceived learning and student satisfaction. At the University of Maine's Brunswick Engineering Program (BEP), an engineering studio course has been developed that shifts the focus from learning the software mechanics to learning and experiencing the engineering design process CAD software skills are conveyed 'in passing', with just-in-time instruction to support students in completing the design portion of a common integrated project. While most students find CAD modeling interesting, the focus on learning the software, as imparted in these traditional first or second semester CAD courses, often does not allow experiencing the role of the software tools within the design process, becoming an exercise in modeling rather than design. Learning outcomes of these introductory courses often focus on the mechanics of generating the models using the software of choice. The BEP places strong emphasis on CAD instruction to not be simply a "learn how to use the software" process, but rather only teach the necessary software skills to facilitate a rapid transition towards self-learning and using the software to help in synthesizing other learning.įirst year design courses in the Mechanical Engineering Curriculum typically intend to familiarize students with the use of a CAD software package in preparation for future design or CAE coursework. PTC University Precision LMS has proven to be effective to teach the software in a standard classroom and studio environment, and future CAD (computer-aided design) course development will further extend application of PTC University Precision LMS to a "flipped classroom" mode. Simulation in the first year is restricted to static solid modeling (in addition to computational modeling of mathematical and physical components, carried out with the computational software used in the program), however in future developments the use will be expanded to include strength and motion simulations (primarily for second year students). PTC Creo, together with computational software (PTC Mathcad, among others), contributes the "simulate" in the "theory – simulation – experimentation" philosophy of the BEP to provide multiple learning modes to the students.
